Journey Around the World or Walk Right Through It

Looking to spend a couple of hours off the beaten path? How about a museum installation that also inspires new ideas? A trip to the Mary Baker Eddy Library in Back Bay offers both. The Mapparium in the library presents visitors with a very unique look at the world – literally from the inside out. A gigantic globe that measures three stories high and 30 feet in diameter was constructed of hundreds of stained glass panels set in bronze framework. The globe was completed in 1935 and the boarders and countries of that era now remain forever frozen in time. Share your own ideas across the bridge and listen to the amazing acoustics that come from being surrounded by glass.
The Hall of Ideas is a celebration of the thoughts that have inspired and transformed society through the years. But these quotes aren’t carved into bronze plaques rather they are displayed through a media presentation that set the ideas free, letting the quotes dance across the floor, up the side panels and under the water in the center fountain.

Thanks for the review! I love your description of the Hall of Ideas about the quotes being set free. David Small’s installation is really gorgeous.
Just wanted to throw in two quick corrections:
Find us at http://www.marybakereddylibrary.org (not .com) and admission is $6 general, but $4 for students, seniors, and kids under 17. Children under 6 are admitted absolutely free. In a college town like Boston, we see a lot of students so I thought that one might be worth mentioning!
So glad you enjoyed your visit!
